Peri-implantitis. Ref.: 43
Peri-implantitis is an inflammatory process that affects the tissues surrounding a dental implant and can lead to its loss. The origin of peri-implantitis is due to an accumulation of plaque and tartar around the surface of the implant. The bacteria in the plaque and tartar will cause the tissues surrounding the implant to become inflamed and the bone will begin to resorb.
One of the treatments for peri-implantitis consists of removing the affected tissue and decontaminating the implant surface with different chemical agents and physical means such as curettes or pressure spray. Once the implant surface is completely clean, and in cases where it is possible, the space left by the resorbed bone can be filled with biomaterials. In cases where it is not possible to fill the bone, the area will be sutured, leaving part of the implant surface exposed to the oral environment, which will require specific hygienic measures.
