Orthognathic surgery is a treatment to correct conditions of the jaws and face due to skeletal disharmonies that can cause problems of malocclusion, sleep apnea, TMJ disorders, esthetic problems, etc.
In the case of a small or underdeveloped jaw, it is possible to perform a maxillary advancement.
A gummy smile caused by an excess of maxilla can be corrected by performing an anterior impaction of the maxillary bone.
An anterior open bite can be corrected by impacting the maxillary bone posteriorly.
A mandible that is too short can be corrected by mandibular advancement.
A mandible that is too large can be corrected by mandibular setback surgery.
In cases where the problem is in both jaws, such as a too small maxilla and a too large mandible, it can be corrected by performing a bimaxillary surgery, to advance the upper jaw and to retract the lower jaw.
A too narrow maxilla can be corrected by expansion of the maxillary bone.
A small chin can be corrected by mentoplasty.
