Oral candidiasis and angular cheilitis. Ref.: 60a
Oral candidiasis is an infection of the mouth caused by the fungus Candida albicans.
It is usually manifested by white plaques on the tongue or inside the cheeks that detach when rubbed and leave the area reddened.
Treatment usually consists of rinses with an antifungal.
Angular cheilitis or cold sore is a lesion in the corner of the lip that can be infected by fungus. It occurs frequently in the older adult population who suffer a decrease in vertical dimension due to loss of teeth, which allows excessive closure of the mouth.
